University alliance set to deepen international cooperation

The city of Nanjing, Jiangsu province, hosted the Jiangsu-Ontario University Cooperative Agreement Signing Ceremony & Presidents' Alliance Roundtable on Nov 6.

Various government officials and principals from Jiangsu province, China and the Canadian province of Ontario attended the ceremony, where a total of 18 cooperative agreements between universities of the two countries were signed.

Luo Zhijun, secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee, welcomed the visit of the Ontario delegation. Luo appreciated the two provinces' friendly relations and expects to launch more economic cooperation as well as cultural exchange activities in the future.

In his speech, Luo emphasized the importance of cultivating young talent with an international perspective in education. He hoped that the two provinces will make use of the university alliance, integrate education resources and promote educational exchange.

Kathleen Wynne, premier of Ontario, considered the visit a great chance to deepen the two provinces' cooperation as this year features the 30th anniversary of the establishment of friendly relations between them. She expressed her hope that the cooperation in education would also contribute to economic and social development in the fields of technical R&D and clean, low carbon energy.

The principals of Nanjing University, Suzhou University, Carleton University and McMaster University introduced their schools' history and the achievements already made in school exchange, scientific research and innovation, and cooperative education.

Since the start of exchange in 1985, Jiangsu province of China and the Canadian province of Ontario have launched 58 cooperative projects, with exchange students numbering 500. The university alliance provides an interactive platform to promote all-around cooperation between the two provinces.
