Jiangsu Institute of Architectural Technology was founded in 1979 as a military school. The school was put under the administration of the Industry Ministry in 1983. It was upgraded to Xuzhou Institute of Architectural Technology by the Ministry of Education in 1999. In the talent cultivation assessment of vocational colleges organized by the Education Ministry in 2005, the institute was awarded "Excellence". In 2007, JIAT was designated as one of the first vocational colleges under the key construction in program by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education. It was elected as one of the national standard top 100 higher vocational institute by China's Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance in 2008.

The institute covers an area of 72 hectares with a total floorage 320,000 sq meters. It has a total of 12,700 full-time students and more than 6,000 continuing education students. There are eight secondary colleges, 52 Majors (34 construction & architecture majors), and 15 Major Groups. The institute has built 21 provincial & city level project research centers, as well as five on-campus research institutes. It has received 33 scientific and technological province & local city progress awards. It has also received the Jiangsu province award of "Science and Technology Advanced University" four years in a row.
