Southeast University (SEU) in Nanjing, Jiangsu province is set to power up a new undergraduate course in robotics, available to 30 students as of this September, according to news portal yangste.com on March 11.
The enrolled students will have to spend the first two years studying automation before specializing in robotics, such as robot control and intelligent robots, for the following two years, said Jin Lizuo, vice dean at the university's automation college.
The move will make SEU the first university in the country to offer systematic undergraduate studies in robotics in the hope of fostering talents in both industrial and intelligent robots, said Ma Xudong, director of the automation college's laboratory.
The limited places on the course are expected to be highly sought after, particularly after the recent global spotlight on Google's Alphago, the first computer to beat Go world champion Lee Sedol, earlier this year.
Candidates interested in the major can register for SEU independent recruitment, with those showing a high level of talent in the area being favored. Otherwise new students can only hope to crack the top 2,000 in this year's gaokao (National College Entrance Exam) in the province, added Ma.
