The Jiangsu Education Foundation will raise a special fund of 3 million yuan ($463,000) to help students from poor families in the under-developed areas of northern Jiangsu realize their college dreams, according to the provincial education department on March 30.
The fund will be allocated for students enrolled by Jiangsu higher educational institutions in 2016 whose families are poverty-stricken or among the national rural dibao program (a program guaranteeing a minimum living standard for rural dwellers in an effort to eliminate poverty) in cities including Xuzhou, Lianyungang, Yancheng, Suqian and Huai'an.
Eligible new students of the bachelor program can get a one-off stipend of 6,000 yuan each; those enrolled by vocational institutes can get 5,000 yuan each.
Students recruited for pedagogical or agricultural majors have a priority in applying for the stipend. Those who have already been financed by government, social organizations or individuals are not entitled to apply.
The program, launched in 2013, has raised funds of more than 12 million yuan and supported greater than1,100 students in the province.
