East China's Jiangsu province plans to enroll about 100 students from Myanmar every year for vocational education during 2016-18.

A welcome and school-opening ceremony for the first group of 87 Myanmar students was held at the Nanjing Vocational Institute of Industry Technology (NIIT) on May 11.

The students will study in the majors of mechanics, electronics, agriculture, medical treatment and business at institutions including NIIT, Jiangsu Agri-Animal Husbandry Vocational College, Changzhou Vocational Institute of Engineering, Yangzhou Polytechnic Institute and Suzhou Vocational Health College for the following three years.

The first 87 students were selected by the Ministry of Education of Myanmar for the China-Myanmar Overseas Students Project for Vocational Education, a project launched by the China-Myanmar Friendship Association and China Education Association for International Exchange that aims to send 200 outstanding Myanmar students to study in China every year.

As an undertaker of the project, the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Education of Myanmar in March 2015 during the eighth China-ASEAN Technical and Vocational Education and Training Expo, agreeing to recruit about 100 Myanmar students every year for vocational education from 2016-18.
