German Chancellor receives honorary doctoral degree from Nanjing University

German Chancellor Angela Merkel received an honorary doctorate from Nanjing University, a prestigious university located in East China's Jiangsu province, at an academic exchange activity held at the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing on June 12, 2016.
Chen Jun, president of Nanjing University, said, "In a complicated political and economicenvironment, Merkel devotes herself to resolving issues including legal dialogues, regional conflicts, climate change ... and makes a great contribution to bilateral relations."
In her speech, Merkel emphasized the importance of creating a free and open atmosphere for academic discussions.
The German Chancellor is in China from June 12 to 14 to attend the fourth Sino-German government consultations.She is travelling with six ministers and a large business delegation, including the CEOs of big multinationals like Volkswagen, BMW and Siemens.
The chancellor had visited Nanjing, Jiangsu province, in August 2007, to launch Germany and China: Moving Ahead Together, a three-year campaign, along with provincial leaders. During her stay, she also visited the Sino-German Law Institute at Nanjing University and the city's Siemens plant.
