Jiangsu helps boost Confucius Institutes in Oceania

The 2016 Joint Conference of Oceanian Confucius Institutes, hosted by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and organized by the University of Queensland, was held in the Australian city of Brisbane, on July 10.

Guests attending the opening ceremony included Xu Xiao, minister counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Australia, Chen Li, deputy consul-general of the People’s Republic of China in Brisbane and Wang Yongli, Deputy Director of Hanban, as well as more than 50 Chinese and local directors of Confucius Institutes (Classrooms).

The conference covered topics including the next five-year plan for the development of Confucius Institutes, the training of native Chinese language teachers at Confucius Institutes, the management of Confucius Classrooms and volunteer teachers, and cooperation among Confucius Institutes, enterprises and social groups.

Zhang Jianming, vice-inspector of Jiangsu Provincial Education Department, briefed the guests about the educational reform in Jiangsu, as well as the development of the two Confucius Institutes jointly run by Jiangsu and Australia – the Confucius Institutes at Queensland University of Technology and at the Education and Community Department of New South Wales. He said the institutes will a platform for local residents to learn about Chinese culture and boost mutual exchanges.

The Confucius Institute is a non-profit public educational organization aimed at promoting Chinese language and culture, supporting local Chinese teaching internationally, and facilitating cultural exchanges.
