(ec.js.edu.cn) Updated:2016-08-25

Jiangsu province has struck a deal with the region's colleges to make materials from thousands of courses freely available online in a move designed to boost the quality of talent in higher education and support the development of an "Internet plus" economy.

Around 300 "massive open online courses", or MOOCs, will be made available each year during the next five-year plan period, meaning that by 2020 as many as 1,500 online courses should be open to the public.

The first wave of MOOCs to be released this year will include approximately 80 academic and entrepreneurship courses and 220 professional courses, according to Jiangsu province's department of education.

In addition to traditional materials such as filmed lectures, reading materials and practice questions, many MOOCs will also provide online forums to encourage discussion among students, professors and teaching assistants.

Users will be able to post reviews of the MOOCs they download, and from next year the highest-rated courses will be awarded the title of "Jiangsu Open Online Course".
