The inauguration of the second accreditation agency for TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualifications in China, Jiangsu Education Services for International Exchange (JESIE), authorized by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA), was held in Nanjing on Feb 20.

The TEFL certificate in China serves as a qualification for foreigners who want to teach English in China, and aims to attract foreign professionals to the teaching profession.

The accreditation agency, JESIE, is responsible for setting up training centers to host vocational programs, developed and promoted by the Information and Research Center of SAFEA.

TEFL training helps improve the quality of foreign teachers so the Information and Research Center will attach more importance to the development of JESIE through providing guidance and staff training frequently, according to Wang Haiyang, director of the Center.

Wang Chengbin, deputy director-general of the Education Department of Jiangsu Province, also claimed that with emphasis on the strategies of both “bringing in” and “going global” in terms of education exchanges, Jiangsu will take the opportunity of developing education by pooling international resources and boosting education exchanges.

As the largest agency for introducing foreign teachers in Jiangsu province, JESIE has contributed much to the cultivation of professionals trained to international standards and will endeavor to become a demonstration site with our support, claimed Liu Su, deputy director of Jiangsu Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs.

JESIE also hosted a training session for Chinese agencies who offer TEFL courses, to which deputies and examiners at 15 agencies from around the country attended on Feb 21. They all agreed that TEFL certification in China is necessary for foreign teachers.

At the session, Wang Haiyang expressed his view that all the agencies should jointly seek cooperation and mutual benefits, and strive to build a brand under favorable circumstances.
