Fan's Coming, a hot dish vending machine customized for office workers, made an eye-catching performance at the event.
Developed by Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, the machine took inspiration from express cabinets – commonly used in China for reserving delivery packages – and impressed by retaining the freshness of the food and providing easy access to consumers.
The machine poses challenges to China's emerging online food delivery services, which are enjoying rapid development despite being notorious for poor service, unreliable food safety and poor supervision.
Users just need to scan the QR code on the machine, make a few clicks on their mobile phones, before getting their hot and fresh food in 15 seconds.
Wang Yaobin, a team member, said over 1,000 machines have been put into practice in central areas of Nanjing and Shanghai and have covered more than 100,000 office workers.
Shao Jin, an official from the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, said the number of participants doubled this year.
"With innovation and entrepreneurship more popular topics for college students, the competition is expected to produce more good results and promote educational reform at more down-to-earth levels," Shao said.
