Meiling Primary School in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province welcomed two heads of educational institutions from the West on Nov 12; Abigail Gilbert, head teacher of Westbourne Primary School in the UK, and Gladys Alegria, chief of the Cajon Valley Department of Education in the US.
Aiming to advance mutual cooperation and exchanges in the educational field, the two educators received warm welcomes from their Chinese counterparts and a tour around the campus from four student guides.
The ladies showed great interest in Chinese cultural classes. They attempted being the masters of puppets dressed in traditional opera costumes, tried their hands at some calligraphy, and also interacted with local students about how to build an Eskimo igloo with cube sugar.
They also agreed to cooperate and share ideas on teaching methods and online courses, and embark on a student exchange program.
The ladies attended a transnational educators' summit that morning, the first of its kind that had taken place in Yangzhou. They shared at the event their Western style pedagogy of offering diversified courses, focusing on students' individual growth, and making education available to the general public.
