Eighteen Cambodian participants revealed their Chinese language proficiency at the eighth Jiangsu Cup Chinese Speech Contest in Phnom Penh city Dec 19.

Involving not only college students but also university teachers, the contest saw 18 participants competing their tests in Chinese stories, language fluency, stage performance, and onsite Q&As.

After a strong competition, Huang Jia'ni and Luo Ruxing (Chinese names) from the Royal University of Phnom Penh took the first prizes, overshadowing their teacher Lin Baocai, who has been studying in Central China's Wuhan city.

"Language and culture carry deep friendship between two peoples and act as a bridge connecting the two sides to learn from each other," said Wang Dexin, director at the political office of the Chinese embassy in Cambodia.

The contest serves to pique Cambodian students' interest in delving into Jiangsu province, China and their cultures. It invited more than 700 primary, secondary and college students to show their language skills this year, and every prizewinner will become visiting scholars in the province or attend short-term study programs at the local prestigious Nanjing University.
