Qian Qihu, a military expert from Jiangsu, clinched the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award for his contribution to national defense infrastructure projects at the 2018 China State Science and Technology Awards ceremony in Beijing on Jan 8.
The ceremony is a grand event that has been held by the Ministry of Science and Technology each year since 2000 in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, to honor those unsung heroes who have helped China stand tall in the world through scientific knowledge and technology.
Along with another top prize winner Liu Yongtan, Qian and Liu joined the 29 elite scientists who have won the award over the previous years.
Both of them will receive 8 million yuan ($1.17 million) – 3 million yuan more than last year – to recognize and encourage the hard work and innovative spirit of the hundreds of thousands of Chinese scientists who in just several decades have helped build China into a world science and technology powerhouse.
Universities from East China's Jiangsu province also clinched 38 awards at the grand ceremony.
The 38 prizes were given for 5 first and 22 second State Science and Technology Progress Awards, 5 second State Natural Science Awards, and 6 second State Technology Innovation Awards, which recognized breakthroughs in fields ranging from geological and geotechnical engineering monitoring to tumor susceptibility gene testing.
