A center for Belarusian studies, the first of its kind in Jiangsu province, was set up at the Nanjing University of Science & Technology (NUST) on May 28.

The center, a joint project between NUST and the Francisk Skorina Gomel State University in Belarus, will be developed into a high-end and welcoming platform which will enable vibrant scientific cooperation and cultural exchange between the two countries.

Jiangsu province and the Belarusian state of Gomel inked a cooperative deal in 2016, while the two universities have been forging collaborative ties for nearly 20 years.

"The center is a pragmatic bond in the education sector; it will boost NUST's research on the political, economic, scientific, technological, educational and humanitarian realities of Belarus," said Fu Mengyin, the university president.

Sergei Khakhomov, rector of Francisk Skorina Gomel State University, said 2019 marks Belarus's year of education in China. "I'm confident that the center will help enhance people's understanding of Belarusian history, education and culture."
