A group of 20 college students from the United States travelled to Suzhou, in Jiangsu province on July 19, in order to learn about embroidery, one of China's cultural treasures.
At the invitation of the School of Chinese Language and Literature at Soochow University, the students spent the day at a local embroidery training school, where they learned the subtle art of Suzhou embroidery from Lu Fuying, an artist who has dedicated herself to the art form for decades, and tried their hands at stitching some silk works.
The students were members of the Critical Language Scholarship Program, an intensive summer overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at US colleges and universities. It is fully funded by the US Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
