A group of primary students from Rugao in East China's Jiangsu province recently visited a local cultural center and embraced the traditional handicraft of dough modeling.
They were introduced to the history of the art and tried their hands at kneading the dough and then carving, shaping and coloring the figurines with various artistic and vivid designs.
Dough modeling in China most represents animals and mythical characters. They are commonly exaggerated in the size of their heads and diversified in colors and shapes, which create a dramatic but artistic contrast. It has been listed by the Rugao government as a local intangible cultural heritage.
