International students from Jiangsu Vocational College of Agriculture and Forestry in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu province spent their first day of school on Sept 2 experiencing traditional Chinese knitting and building friendships.

Laotian and Pakistani students were the most active at the cultural immersion activity. Under the guidance of masters Wen Zhendan and Zhang Yanmei, they learned the basics of the art of wool knitting.

The teachers shared their opinions on works by members of the school's wool knitting group, who dedicated their summer holidays to making their own wool articles. The works featured the 12 Chinese zodiac signs, flowers of every kind, and fruits and vegetables, among other things.

The international students said they enjoyed their first school day experiencing Chinese culture as well as the chance to make friends with Chinese students.

Wool knitting makes use of a long, thick needle to create loops with a single yarn, just like braids in rows. It is lightweight, absorbent, and ideal for tight fitting products.
