International students from the School of Overseas Education at Soochow University in Suzhou, Jiangsu province joined a local primary school in a moon cake making activity on Sept 10.
Differing from moon cakes that feature Cantonese and Beijing styles, the pastries they made featured distinctive Suzhou elements, which usually have shredded pork as their fillings and are freshly made, baked and can only be preserved for a few days. The cakes are round in shape, simple in design, but feature a rich taste that can nicely blend the dryness of the crispy skin and the oily stuffing, and then create a salty yet sweet flavor that can greatly please one's appetite.
The Suzhou style moon cakes are a must-try recipe during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the eighth month on the Chinese lunar calendar every year. People living in Suzhou and the surrounding Yangtze River Delta region savor the snack as the most important ritual of the festival.
