Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province, will export its traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) strength to Pakistan by setting up an industry-university-research platform in the South Asian country.
The 500-million-yuan investment was inked in Nanjing on Sept 18 by the Nanjing New Industry Investment Group, Jiangsu research institute on TCM industry, and the National Institute of Health in Pakistan.
Wang Xuegen, deputy Party secretary of Nanjing New Industry Investment Group, said that Pakistan being the first overseas stop of Nanjing's TCM endeavors was ignited from the sound relations between the two countries and stood higher to cultural and market feedback.
He added that Pakistan residents are accustomed to using herbal medicines. The country's large population and market potential have also been magnets for Chinese investors.
Cheng Jun, head of the Jiangsu research institute on TCM industry, said a localized platform with Pakistani efforts will pave the way for TCM's acclimatization overseas. Within the agreement, Nanjing will bring first-hand TCM resources and professionals to the country, carrying the aim of setting up a TCM manufacturing base in Pakistan.
"Pakistan boasts a rich history of traditional medicine. We applaud the two countries' cooperation in medical care and look forward to more Chinese-invested TCM projects landing in Pakistan," Hassan Dawood Butt, director of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor.
