The educational department and sports bureau of Jiangsu announced on Nov 12 that the eastern Chinese province will select 750 local schools to improve physical education.
The group will consist of 520 primary and middle schools, 200 kindergartens, and 30 higher learning institutes.
Officials said the schools' current strength in physical education will be taken into consideration. They advised colleges and universities to offer more extracurricular athletics, primary and middle schools to extend playtimes and group training, and kindergartens to incorporate morning and afternoon exercises.
The schools were also required to – on an annual basis – host events including sports meets and individual sports competitions. At least 90 percent of the students were required to take part in such events, and teachers and parents were also encouraged to engage.
