Over 70 doctoral students studying overseas gathered in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu province on Nov 25 and shared their ideas on innovation and entrepreneurship.
Coming from 14 countries and regions such as Germany, Australia and Japan, the students stood out from among 157 applicants as being the best fit to satisfy Jiangsu's demand for skilled workers, according to Zhang Hongwei, deputy director at the provincial department of human resources and social security.
The competition included categories such as high-end equipment manufacturing, high-end software and information services, and new medicine, pharmacology and biotechnology.
As China is increasingly emphasizing the importance of garbage sorting, the data processing system coded by doctor Yang Shu, which can be used in intelligent garbage collection, caught the eye of judges and spectators at the event.
Yang relied on his expertise in big data, artificial intelligence, image identification and internet of things to develop the system, which not only links the public, garbage collectors and recycling companies, but also helps with the classification, transportation and processing of garbage.
Yang said his system also includes a reward system which offers cash bonuses to users every time they sort their garbage.
Having now been carried out 13 times, the event has led to 81 professional setting up high-tech enterprises in Jiangsu with a total investment of over 2 billion yuan ($284 million). Industries include new energy, new materials, new medicine and pharmacology, and environmental protection.
Officials from the human resource departments, high-tech parks and development zones in 13 Jiangsu cities as well as enterprise representatives also took part in the event.
