Shao Yang, a Chinese scientist who recently renounced his Canadian citizenship, had his identity checked with his brand-new ID card at the railway station in Nanjing on Nov 14, before he boarded a high-speed bullet train to Zhengzhou in Central China's Henan province for a national pathology conference. 

The 34-year-old scientist decided to renounce his Canadian citizenship in favor of China because he saw the opportunities offered by China's rising biology and pharmaceutical industry, especially its precision medicine industry. 

"China is a land full of hope," Shao said. 

The genetics and biotechnology company which he set up in Nanjing six years ago is rising to the top of China's cancer precision medicine industry and pushing the country's gene sequencing technology to the global forefront. 

Shao said he was confident and would dedicate the next several decades of his life to the company. 

"We will strive to make our names known throughout the world's genetic fields," Shao said. 

Shao renounced his Chinese citizenship when moving to Canada with his parents at the age of 13. His application to regain citizenship was approved by the public security departments at both the city and province levels, and he now holds an ID card, household registration, and passport.       

"I'm finally a Chinese citizen again," Shao said.
