The cultural experience gained from a music workshop in Nantong, Jiangsu province on Dec 12 refreshed the understanding of international students of Peking Opera -- an artistic genre regarded as the quintessence of Chinese culture.

Coming from Laos, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia and other countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the 40 students were in their second year in China.

The organizers said they were not only fluent in speaking Chinese, but also big fans of Chinese culture.

They were introduced by veteran scholars to China's traditional cultural and national conditions and were also invited to put on classic Peking Opera costumes and work together on an opera show.

Hasibul Hasan Shato, a student from Bangladesh, came to China in October 2018.

"I've known long before that China is a country with long history and splendid culture. My days in China have offered me an opportunity to take a close-up look at the country and blend into the local culture," Shato said.

"I was also overwhelmed by the hospitality of Chinese people, especially my teachers and schoolmates. I'm eager to witness local development and resonate with Chinese culture."

Local educator Fang Jihong urged the students, who were benefiting from China's BRI, cherish their time in the country – as well as to get to know more about China's culture and history and bring stories about Chinese people to an international audience.
