Experts and entrepreneurs from home and abroad gathered in Nanjing – capital of eastern Jiangsu province -- on Jan 14 to do conduct a brainstorming session on how the internationalize its workforce more, according to local officials.
Zhu Wenjun, director of the alumni association of Southeast University in Nanjing, said alumni are an important channel to attract international talent as the city is home to a number of prestigious colleges and universities.
"We are working to build closer ties with alumni, especially those living and working overseas," Zhu said.
"We have built a think tank and will innovate our ways to attract talent."
Xu Su'an, chairman of a local human resources service group, suggested Nanjing set up services platforms overseas, to help promote first-hand the city's preferential policies and offer easier channels for overseas talent to settle in Nanjing.
Fan Shiliang, from a new materials research center, proposed Nanjing focus on the needs of emerging research institutions, particularly those with international business, as well as cut red tape and offer more preferential policies.
"For example, the local government can help solve taxes between different countries, housing and even the use of credit cards," Fan said.
Nanjing recently rolled out detailed requirements on the internationalization of its talent pool, such as developing more flexible measures to attract foreign people, putting forward more incentive policies for urgently needed foreign professionals -- and shortening the processing time for work and residence permits for top foreign experts to five days.
