A red box, a salute and an appreciation of "Thank you for your hard work" was what Zein, a 29-year-old Syrian doctoral student studying in Nanjing University of the Arts, has impressed officers at the Yuejianglou police station in Nanjing on Feb 10.

Inside the box were some snacks, 1,000 yuan ($143) and a letter in Chinese, through which the young man introduced himself and cheered up for China and Chinese people.

"You are not alone and we are always with you," Zein wrote.

He wished to donate the money to people working at the front line in Wuhan and expressed confidence in China overcoming the difficulties and revitalizing again.

Not only Zein, his family members were also active in extending support to China, including Walid Ali, his father.

A famous Syrian oil painter, Ali has opened exhibitions in Greece, France, Russia and the Czech Republic, and was also the first Syrian artist to put on a solo exhibition in Nanjing.

The artist said he was inspired from Chinese people making concerted efforts to fight against the novel coronavirus and what he could do was to flex his brush and create works of blessing, which carried the hope of encouraging Chinese people, especially those in Wuhan.

Zein has been living in China for nine years, his older brother and sister, as well as his parents, have all moved to Nanjing. The family chose to stay China in spite of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus and followed the school and local government's instruction to stay at home.

"China is our home and Chinese people are our family members," Zein said.
