Festive lanterns in Nanjing can be dated back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420). The art has taken inspiration from paper trays, painting, calligraphy, paper-cutting, embroidery and sculpture and has integrated many craft techniques such as wood crafting, lacquer painting, clay figurines and knitting.
