Twenty overseas students from Changzhou Institute of Industry Technology recently explored the time-honored comb culture in Changzhou, East China's Jiangsu province, local media reported.

Known as the "royal comb" in ancient China, a Changzhou comb comprises two parts – a typical comb and one with double-edged fine teeth.

In ancient times, the combs were used to get rid of dandruff and lice and massage the scalp. It was also regarded as a token of affection that young men would present as a gift to their loved ones.

The craft of making combs, which consists of 101 processes, has been designated as a national intangible cultural heritage. The students who learned about the comb said they were impressed by how delicate yet complex the object is.

Some students also tried their hands at punching the comb teeth. The task, which master craftsmen perform effortlessly, proved to be rather difficult for the foreigners.

"The combs embody unique traditional Chinese craft and reflect Chinese culture in an extensive and profound way," said one student.

International students at Changzhou Institute of Industry Technology can take part in various cultural immersion activities, such as calligraphy, paper-cutting, embroidery, tea art, tai chi, Chinese speaking contest, painting and writing contest, and distinctive celebrations for traditional Chinese festivals.
