Hungarian mathematician Istvan Mezo: You never get bored in Nanjing

Istvan Mezo, a 39-year-old Hungarian who teaches math at the Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, has been living in Nanjing for seven years.
His favorite way to relax after a day’s work is to take a long walk around the city taking photos.
Mezo is interested in everything about Nanjing, especially the lives of ordinary people, and he always wants to capture the best moments.
"Every life and job need to be respected and are worth recording," he said. The Hungarian said growing up in a relatively poor area has made him more sensitive to the lives of ordinary people. The mathematician said taking photos has not only enriched his memories but also brought him inspiration.
"Math is more of an introverted thing, sitting in a chair and keeping calm, while photography is just the opposite. I can talk and interact with other people and that relaxes me,” Mezo said.
His connections with China date back to 2011, when he was attending an academic seminar in Hong Kong and was deeply attracted to traditional Chinese characters the first time he saw them.
He started learning Chinese then, and seven years on, he is quite fluent in speaking and skilled in writing Chinese.
"I have a thing for challenges and complicated things," Mezo said. "Chinese language is regarded as the most difficult in the world, and Chinese culture is rich and profound, and that 'tickled' me to try and conquer them."
His family members have also found their way to enjoy life in Nanjing.
"You will never get bored in Nanjing as the aging city keeps surprising you," Mezo said.
