About the course

"Machine Elements in Mechanical Design" is compulsory basic course targeting the year 2 overseas students with 3 credits. This course is to provide the concepts, procedures, data, and analysis techniques necessary to design machine elements commonly found in mechanical devices and systems. Students completing the course of study should be able to execute original designs for machine elements and integrate the elements into a system composed of several elements. As a professional basic course, the textbook《Machine Elements in Mechanical Design》by our teaching team is recommended to students. It is helpful for the later lecturing and course design. The course covers 4 parts, totally 15 chapters. Students master the calculation method of common parts and components, and then have the ability of mechanical design preliminarily. We adopt three teaching methods to let the students be interested in the course. "Engineering Case-Based" teaching method is very effective for students' motivation. We aim at the key knowledge points for chapters, select practical and effective engineering cases, and do the analysis and explanation in class. "Problem-Centered" teaching method drives students to use their brains to think. This is organized according to the process of solving problems and runs through the whole teaching process. "Practice-Oriented" teaching method cultivates students' practical and innovative abilities. There are two experiments to match the course. We lead students to practice after class. Through such design practice, our students can apply what they have learned to real life. They feel the importance and practicability of professional knowledge. We hope students learn to be attainable, learn to be developed. Students of mechanical engineering need to cultivate information literacy (called IR). Getting enough information to acquire the lifelong learning ability of professional knowledge and develop the innovative ability of new knowledge. In the class they are developed the ability of consulting documents and technical materials.
