A two-minute short video reflecting on people's well-being through a piece of jianbing, or mixed grain pancake, recently won the student group gold award at a skills competition for the advertising industry in Jiangsu province, local media outlets reported.

"A piece of pancake used to just satisfy one's hunger, but nowadays, it has become a symbol of people pursuing a healthy and happy life," said Xu Geyi, one of the creators and also a junior student at Jiangsu Ocean University.

Her teammate, Fang Yao, a senior student, said that pancakes seem quite common in daily life, but they have endowed it with new meanings.

Xiaokang, a target that has been carried by Chinese people for decades to achieve a moderately prosperous society, was behind the story of the pancake.

From kneading the dough and rolling it out on the flat pan, then adding an egg and final seasonings like sweet bean sauce, chopped green onion, and black sesame, the story of making a pancake is like the way that Chinese people have gone through to overcome difficulties and realized improved living standards, the video creators explained.

"During the two-week filming time in Lianyungang, I've seen the hustle and bustle of breakfast shops in the early morning, shuttling car flows in the daytime, night fairs that were crowded with hungry people to satisfy their stomachs after a day's work, and a tranquil side of the city late at night," said Li Jiayi, a senior student. "I've recorded the authentic looks of local residents, as well as recorded the diversification of the society."
