International students from Jiangsu University in Zhenjiang learned the story of Zhao Yafu on March 26. Zhao has devoted decades of his life to alleviating poverty in rural areas.
Zhao told them about his early years studying overseas and how he made up his mind to return to China to work toward poverty alleviation by helping local farmers gain higher yields, sell products to more areas, and earn more money.
The students asked many questions, such as how he motivated local farmers and how he went about alleviating poverty.
Zhao encouraged the students to study hard, bring China's experiences in poverty alleviation back to their homelands, and guide their fellow countrymen toward prosperity.
The students said the stories left them with a deep impression and that they will use the knowledge and skills they have obtained in China to develop and strengthen their own countries.
A student from Syria said he felt poverty alleviation was not only a government's duty but also an individual's responsibility. He said he will pay more attention to social needs and strive to contribute more to society.
A student from Pakistan said he was inspired by Zhao's determination.
