A total of 32 foreigners from 13 countries working, studying, or otherwise living in East China's Jiangsu province, performed 13 Chinese songs on May 8, local media outlets reported.

They were taking part in the finals of a Chinese singing competition organized by the Jiangsu provincial government for foreigners. A total of 162 foreigners from 54 countries have participated in the event since it first started two months ago.

Odonis Nicolas, 38, a Filipino person who does the vocals in a band in Yancheng, claimed first place in the competition with an inspired rendering of the renowned Chinese song I Believe.

"I've been living in Yancheng for two years. The city is big and beautiful, and its people are friendly and hospitable. I want to share the song with my family and friends in Jiangsu," Nicolas said.

Garrison Tubbs, another first-place prize winner, said that he was not expecting to win the prize and expressed his appreciation for Chinese culture, especially its music and operas.

There are about 100,000 foreigners currently working, studying, or otherwise living in Jiangsu province. To enhance their sense of belonging, Jiangsu in the past four years has invited foreigners to take part in various photography, Chinese writing, orienteering, and short video competitions.
