Primary and junior high school students in cities across Jiangsu province have benefited from a new education policy that took effect at the start of the current semester.

Nantong is the only city in Jiangsu that is piloting the new "double reduction" policy, which aims to relieve students of the burden of excessive homework and reduce the need for after-school tutoring. Primary and junior high schools in Nantong have also been offering various after-school activities such as baseball and basketball lessons to students.

Primary and junior high schools in Suzhou have since Sept 1 been offering two hours of after-school service to provide students with guidance for their homework and after-school activities.

Over in Nanjing, after-school services started in the second week of the semester.

Nanjing had in 2013 piloted a move to offer after-school service to students who would stay late on campus after school. This was later implemented in all the primary schools in Nanjing in 2017.
