High school students go hiking in the name of peace
The international school of Nanjing No 13 High School in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu province participated in the sixth International Peace Hiking to Commemorate Nanjing Safety Zone which concluded on Dec 5.
Nearly 300 students and teachers from the international school spent 45 minutes walking around the campus on Nov 29, with their tracks forming the number 1213, which stands for Dec 13, China's national memorial day for victims of the Nanjing Massacre which happened during World War II.
Hu Yirui, director of the international school, said that the students are all going to study abroad and the hiking event was aimed at encouraging them to cherish and promote peace across the world.
More than 70,000 people from home and abroad took part in the event online and offline and walked a combined 700,000 kilometers. Over 10,000 participants also shared messages of peace.
The Nanjing Safety Zone was a demilitarized zone for Chinese civilians set up by foreigners in Nanjing during China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.
