East China's Jiangsu province has been offering peace education to students, especially international students and Chinese students who are going to study abroad, inspiring them to spread peace across the world.
In 2017, a number of the province's schools together with the Memorial Hall for the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders established the Purple Grass International Peace School. Through exhibitions in the memorial hall and historical sites in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu, the school teaches students about the history of the massacre and World War II.
The school has also organized activities such as the ringing of the bell, visiting the former residence of John Rabe, a German businessman who helped protect Chinese civilians during the Nanjing Massacre, as well as making paper purple grass. Purple grass, also known as February orchid or Chinese violet cress, is considered a symbol of peace.
A "peace pack" consisting of online courses, e-books, and cultural innovative products is prepared for students who are going to study abroad to remind them to promote peace overseas.
To date, the international peace school has received over 4,500 students from more than 90 countries. A number of universities such as Nanjing University, Southeast University, Jiangsu Vocational College of Agriculture and Forestry, as well as City University of Macau have also organized activities for international students to experience peace education.
