Professionals at the Agricultural College of Yangzhou University in Yangzhou, East China's Jiangsu province have developed an intelligent system to assist farmers in Suining county, Xuzhou with wheat farming.

Through images collected by satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles, the system can monitor the content of protein and predict crop yields. It also helps experts work out precise irrigation and fertilization plans for farmers.

Thanks to the advanced technology, wheat farming in the county has become more effective. Fan Zhenyun, a wheat farmer in the Suining county, said the system has reduced his overheads by half and increased profits by 20 percent. Before the application of the technology, he invested more than 100,000 yuan ($15,759.65) on the wheat fields and earned over 200,000 yuan annually.

The research team has also built a database to boost the sales of wheat. To date, more than 50 family farms and cooperatives have signed cooperation agreements with agricultural companies. In addition, farmers can earn 400 yuan more than before from each mu (about 666.67 square meters) of wheat.

The system has obtained 11 invention patents and researchers are working on technologies like artificial intelligence, remote sensing and deep learning to improve its data processing efficiency.
