The final of the eighth Internet of Things (IoT) Technology and Applications Competition for College Students, which was organized by the China Institute of Communications and Chinese Institute of Electronics, was held in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu province on Aug 26.

Eighty of the more than 500 projects submitted to the event qualified for the finals. Among them was an oversight system for low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) developed by a team from the College of Electronic and Information Engineering of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

A traffic light control model designed by a team from the School of Internet of Things of Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications also drew many eyeballs at the contest. The control system is expected to help ease congestion and improve the flow of traffic during the morning and evening rush hours.

The competition is aimed at encouraging college students to create innovations and start new businesses in the IoT sector, as well as promoting the integration of the real economy with 5G communications, big data, blockchain, and artificial intelligence.

Zhu Hongbo, director of the China (Wuxi) Institute of Internet of Things, said the event will also help train high-level internet talents and turn innovative ideas into reality.
