Jiangsu makes progress in basic education

Ge Daokai, director of Jiangsu Provincial Education Department, said in a recent interview that Jiangsu has made significant progress in the development of the basic education sector over the past decade.

According to Ge, the move to enhance basic education in the province has been largely focused on implementing supportive policies, expanding education resources and improving education quality.

In the past decade, Jiangsu has issued nearly 20 government policies to aid the development of basic education.

To meet the education needs of students, the province has built, rebuilt and expanded nearly 8,000 kindergartens, primary and middle schools in the past decade.

In terms of high school education, Jiangsu has expanded its enrollment quota by 40,000 students annually for four consecutive years.

In addition, Jiangsu is currently the home to 106 special schools. The enrollment rate of school-aged children with special needs in compulsory education is over 98 percent in the province.

Jiangsu has also been making efforts to build high-quality schools. It has invested more than 58.5 billion yuan ($8.09 billion) in the reconstruction of schools.

Today, the coverage rate of high-quality kindergartens in Jiangsu stands at over 90 percent. The number of high schools at three-star level and above in Jiangsu accounts for 80 percent of the total.

Furthermore, Jiangsu has spent more than 1.2 billion yuan to launch 3,329 programs in the past decade to improve the quality of basic education.
