Overview: Jiangsu Maritime Institute (JMI) is a full-time junior college run by the People's Government of Jiangsu Province, a key demonstration and high-level vocational college in Jiangsu Province, and one of the earliest demonstration vocational education groups (alliances) cultivated by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. Founded in 1951 , JMI has been the first specialized school for training oceangoing and inland river crew members since the founding of the PRC. It is also one of the earliest Chinese maritime institutes to implement the STCW78/95 and pass the certification of the International Maritime Organization. In the past 70 years, nearly 200,000 alumni have been cultivated successively, and they now serve in domestic and foreign large and medium-sized enterprises and institutions engaged in ocean transport, inland river shipping, shipbuilding, port engineering, logistics and trade, information and commerce.

JMI consists of eleven departments, namely, School of Navigation Technology, School of Electrical and Automation Engineering, School of Ship and Ocean Engineering, School of Economics and Management, School of Information Engineering, School of Humanities and Arts, School of International Education, School of Continuing Education, School of Marxism, School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and School of Sergeant and Military Education, as well as Physical Education Department. JMI now has 13,096 full-time students.

JMI owns a diverse and internationalized faculty team. More than 60% of the key professional teachers have studied abroad to embrace international vision and advanced vocational education concepts; more than 40 teachers can teach bilingually. JMI provides a well-equipped international student apartment and welcomes students from all over the world to benefit from its international student scholarships.
