The Jiangning campus and Wutai campus in Nanjing are home to more than 1,900 faculty members, while the Kangda College is in Lianyungang. NMU is proud to have seven academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (including joint appointments), one foreign member of the National Academy of Medicine of the United States, and 78 national high-level talents. The school has six national teaching teams, among which two have been selected as the National Colleges and Universities "Huang Danian" Style Teaching Teams. Besides, there is one demonstration team for national-level political theory courses, one innovation team recognized by the Ministry of Education, and two national research teams for innovation.

NMU has eight primary disciplines with 54 sub-disciplines authorized to offer doctoral degrees, five units to offer doctoral degrees for cross-disciplines, two units to offer professional doctoral degrees; 11 primary disciplines with 65 sub-disciplines authorized to offer master's degrees, and six centers for post-doctoral studies. They cover seven major academic fields, namely medicine, science, engineering, management, law, education, and literature. It also has three national key disciplines, one national key (cultivation) discipline, 29 national clinical key disciplines, and six competitive disciplines of Jiangsu universities (Phase III). In the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, NMU's Public Health and Preventive Medicine was rated as A+, Clinical Medicine, Basic Medicine, Stomatology, and Nursing were rated as B+, and Pharmacy was rated as B. It provides 25 undergraduate programs, two integrated undergraduate-to-doctor programs, and three "5+3" integrated undergraduate-to-graduate programs, accommodating nearly 20,000 students currently. NMU has been selected as the 2.0 base for cultivating top-notch students in the basic disciplines by the Ministry of Education. National first-rate undergraduate programs account for more than 70% of the total disciplines. Five textbooks have won the first National Excellent Teaching Materials Award. Lots of national-level teaching platforms and curriculum resources are available. The enrollment, cultivation, employment, and performance of students or alumni have received high praise from all walks of life. Its graduates consistently rank first among their peers in China in terms of passing the medical qualification examination for licensed doctors, and their employment rate has remained at 96% or higher.

NMU has set up a couple of national-level research platforms, such as the State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine, the International Joint Research Center for Environment and Human Health, and the Collaborative Innovation Center for Personalized Cancer Medicine Co-sponsored by the Ministry and the Province, as well as more than 30 provincial or ministerial-level key laboratories (engineering research centers and innovation centers). Its medical simulation education center and the Jiangsu medicine-based animal experiment base are best in class in China. Its Institute of Healthy Jiangsu Development is the sole provincial health policy think tank. Since the 13th Five-year Plan was started, NMU has engaged in nearly 100 national major scientific research projects, including the state key laboratory research and development programs (topics), the key and major projects under the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the innovation research group projects. As a result, it has won several national and provincial awards, of which the second prize in the National Natural Science is one of the most important.

Over the past years, NMU has extensively conducted foreign exchange activities, and established contacts and cooperation in various forms with other universities, scientific research institutions, and social groups at home and abroad. Good bilateral cooperation and academic exchange relations have been established with medical schools or scientific research institutions in countries and regions such as the United States, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

During the 14th Five-year Plan, NMU insists on taking Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics as its guideline, and places its focus on first-rate medical education, discipline development, and teaching facilities.
