International students in Jiangsu immerse themselves in Chinese New Year traditions
In recent days, international students across Jiangsu province have been experiencing Chinese New Year traditions through a variety of immersive cultural activities.
At Nanjing Agricultural University, nearly 20 foreign students gathered to make hanfu (traditional Chinese clothing) and create snake-themed pom-pom art. As an instructor passionately explained the historical evolution of hanfu, the students listened attentively. Once the lecture concluded, they eagerly opened their material kits to begin crafting their own hanfu.
A student from Sudan quickly grasped the techniques. After carefully cutting the necessary fabric pieces, he dressed a mannequin and secured the materials in place. Having lived in China for six years, this was his first time making hanfu. "It's an amazing experience, like stepping into an authentic scene from ancient China," he remarked.
Meanwhile, at the Yongfeng Community in Nanjing's Pancheng sub-district, international students from Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology engaged in another festive activity. Fourteen students from countries including Morocco, Indonesia, and Bangladesh taught local children how to make traditional Chinese New Year prints. Zhang Meng, a counselor from the university, noted that these students were highly enthusiastic about Spring Festival. They not only taught themselves skills like printmaking and writing Spring Festival couplets but also volunteered to share their knowledge with local children, serving as mentors for over 20 young participants.
On Jan 25, in Jianhu county, Yancheng, which is known as the "Hometown of Chinese Acrobatics", more than 40 international students from countries such as Russia, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, all studying at Yancheng Polytechnic College, immersed themselves in traditional Chinese culture by learning Huaiju Opera, acrobatics, and paper cutting. They also sampled local delicacies such as Jianhu lotus root starch balls, Shanggang straw stove cakes, and oil-fried rice cakes.
