Jiangsu province continued to lead the nation in education reform and development in 2023. With nearly 15,600 schools at all levels, including 168 higher education institutions, the province maintained a robust academic landscape.  More than 16 million students were enrolled in various academic programs, supported by a dedicated workforce of 1.07 million full-time teachers. The gross enrollment rate for secondary and higher education surpassed 95 and 70 percent, respectively.

Jiangsu made significant progress in basic education. The province had 8,073 kindergartens serving 2.1 million children, with 122 new high-quality kindergartens and 158 new or expanded kindergartens. The province also had 2,336 middle schools enrolling 2.77 million students, 4,009 primary schools with 5.89 million students, and 664 general high schools serving 1.43 million students. Additionally, 40 new or expanded high schools were completed, with more than 90 percent of students attending high-quality institutions.

Jiangsu's higher education continued to thrive further with 78 undergraduate universities and 90 vocational colleges, with a total enrollment of 2.62 million students. Among them, 2.3 million were undergraduate and vocational students, while 319,600 were pursuing postgraduate studies. Thirty-eight universities had 263 disciplines ranked in the top 1 percent of the Essential Science Indicators, the highest number in the country for the first time. In addition, 360 engineering programs were accredited, ranking first nationwide.

Vocational education reform also gained momentum, with 211 secondary vocational schools, enrolling 679,100 students and 47,500 full-time teachers.

Lifelong education resources grew significantly, as the province established a five-tier community education system across both urban and rural areas. Each city had at least three senior universities, and each county at least one, with 70 percent coverage at the township levels. More than 24 percent of elderly residents participated in community education activities. A digital learning platform serving lifelong education was developed, offering over 3,200 video courses with a total of 17,000 hours.

Teacher development also saw new progress. In 2023, six university faculty members were newly elected as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Universities in Jiangsu had more than 2,000 national-level high-caliber talents, including 84 academicians, accounting for about one-tenth of the total in Chinese universities.
