For Nathanael Dwight Pelton, a US teacher at Suzhou Foreign Language School, Suzhou is more than just a place to live—it is a second home. Having spent 20 years in the city, he has developed a strong emotional bond with its rich history, scenic landscapes, and traditional cuisine.

Pelton first arrived in Suzhou in 2005, initially planning a short vacation. However, the city's blend of modern vibrancy and classical elegance left an unforgettable impression on him. Three years later, when a job opportunity came up, he eagerly returned to the place that had captured his heart.

An avid outdoor enthusiast, Pelton enjoys hiking and often visits Lingyan Mountain, Dayang Mountain, and Tianchi Mountain. He is equally drawn to the classical beauty of Suzhou's gardens, which he sees as a perfect embodiment of Suzhou's aesthetics. As for local cuisine, he, like many foreigners, is particularly fond of the renowned Squirrel Mandarin Fish, as well as Suzhou-style soup dumplings and noodles.

As the IG program director for Suzhou Foreign Language School's junior high department, Pelton has introduced distinctive educational concepts and developed specialized courses. He actively creates opportunities for students to learn beyond textbooks, taking them to the Suzhou Museum, historical sites, and industry experts for firsthand knowledge.

Pelton's commitment to education extends beyond the campus. He has led students in volunteer teaching activities at migrant schools and facilitated scholarships funded by foreign enterprises in Suzhou.

His dedication to public service has also taken him to remote areas, leading educational support initiatives in Yunnan and even Kenya. Additionally, he actively promotes international education exchanges, inviting US teachers to Suzhou and organizing around 15 exchange programs annually.

Pelton is also an artist, using his creative talents to further cross-cultural communication. Since 2005, he has held 17 exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, and Suzhou, while fostering collaborations between Chinese and foreign artists.
