Nanjing University advances global field research training for undergraduates
Nanjing University had launched 53 undergraduate global field research and scientific training programs by the end of 2024, with a total of 100 field sessions conducted across the humanities, sciences, engineering, and medicine. These initiatives have involved 3,027 students and faculty members in innovative practices.
Characterized by their strong interdisciplinary integration, the programs aim to cultivate students' innovation, practical skills, and teamwork capabilities. They also emphasize cross-cultural collaboration, enabling students from diverse academic backgrounds to engage in academic experiences.
One of the university's earliest initiatives is the China-Russia Lake Baikal Earth Science Field Research and Training Program, conducted in cooperation with Irkutsk National Research Technical University.
Before departure, faculty mentors define research themes and guide students through specialized lectures and hands-on training to prepare them for fieldwork. This ensures students can quickly adapt and gain meaningful insights during their time overseas.
Through years of practice, Nanjing University has developed an effective teaching model for undergraduate research training. The process — comprising preparation, observation, recording, summarization, and presentation — allows students to experience a complete scientific research cycle in an international context.
In addition to field studies, Nanjing University collaborates with international organizations such as the United Nations to run programs focused on global governance and youth leadership. These initiatives aim to nurture talent with global vision, knowledge of international rules, and strong professional competence, preparing them for roles in international organizations.
