To deepen international students' understanding of China and promote intercultural exchange, Soochow University organized a summer practice program in Tongren, Guizhou, from Aug 18 to 24.
More than 50 Chinese and international students and faculty from Suchow University, Tongren University, Yangzhou University, Tongji University, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, and the Confucius Institute at the University of Gdansk in Poland participated in cultural studies and exchange activities across Tongren.

The program offered immersive experiences in intangible cultural heritage like dragon and lion dancing, wood carving, embroidery, papermaking, Nuo opera, and matcha tea. Led by local artisans, participants engaged directly with these crafts, gaining insights into their artistry and importance.
Tongren, home to 29 ethnic groups, has a rich culture. Students visited the Yinjiang Museum to see exhibits on ethnicity, farming, weaving, batik, and folk traditions like lantern shows, suona music, and dance. They also went to Yunshe village for the Water Dragon Festival, a bonfire, and making rice cakes, experiencing rural vitality.
The students further engaged in local cultural events, basketball and soccer games, and joint performances with residents.

Loke En Tong, an international student from Malaysia, said: "Through this program, I not only broadened my horizons but also learned to draw strength from nature and culture. The most important thing is to enjoy the process. We need to open our hearts to understand different cultures and embrace diversity."
