International students at Jiangsu University immersed themselves in the charm of traditional Chinese opera during a cultural event on March 24, ahead of World Theatre Day on March 27.

During the event, the students dressed in costumes representing different opera roles and learned basic stage movements under the guidance of professional performers.

They practiced the stylized gestures and postures of xiaosheng (young male roles) and huadan (young female roles), gaining a firsthand understanding of the highly codified performance techniques of Chinese opera.

Malaysian student Choi Yao Lee said she had previously only had a vague impression of Peking Opera, describing it as "ancient and beautiful". But wearing the costume gave her a much deeper appreciation.

"I felt both excited and solemn," she said. "I could sense that every costume and accessory carries profound Chinese cultural significance."

Russian student Daniil Shilikov also tried signature techniques such as fixed poses, finger movements and stage walking with the help of instructors.

"Although the movements look slow, it's not easy to make them coordinated," he said. "This experience helped me feel the unique charm of Chinese opera. Its beauty is truly one of a kind in the world."
