International students and faculty attending a summer school program at Jiangsu University of Technology gained hands-on insight into China's mural heritage during a cultural exchange activity hosted by the university's Artificial Intelligence Innovation Design Research Center on June 13.
The program introduced participants to the history, craftsmanship and conservation of traditional Chinese murals through lectures, guided tours and practical painting experiences.
Professor Wang Yansong, drawing on his extensive expertise in mural conservation and reproduction, delivered a lecture on the development of Chinese murals, their artistic characteristics, traditional materials and painting techniques, as well as the methods used in their restoration and replication.
During a visit to the research institute, participants examined full-scale mural reproductions, conservation materials and exhibits. They also learned about the complete production process of traditional earthen-wall murals, from preparing the plaster surface and outlining designs to applying mineral pigments and finishing the paintings.
