For Ma Jie, a Liberian student majoring in International Economics and Trade at Jiangsu Normal University, studying in China has become more than an academic journey – it has strengthened his long-standing interest in the country and inspired a vision for promoting economic cooperation between China and Liberia.

Growing up in Liberia, Ma was surrounded by Chinese-made products and saw firsthand the close business ties between local traders and Chinese companies. Those early experiences sparked a curiosity about China's rapid development and ultimately led to the decision to pursue higher education in Xuzhou, a city in northwestern Jiangsu province.

Before arriving, he knew Xuzhou mainly as a city with a rich history. What came as a surprise was its modern urban landscape, where skyscrapers, vibrant commercial districts and public squares blend seamlessly with centuries-old cultural landmarks.

Outside the classroom, exploring the city has become a favorite pastime. From Pengcheng Square and Hubu Mountain to the Xuzhou Underground City Site Museum and Xuzhou Museum, he enjoyed discovering the city's unique mix of historical heritage and contemporary life.

Another passion has helped make Xuzhou feel like home: soccer.

Before coming to China, Ma was a professional soccer player who was selected for the Liberian national team and spent years coaching young athletes.

Today, friendly matches with Chinese classmates have become a regular part of campus life, creating opportunities to build friendships through a shared love of the sport.

Ma has already mapped out the next stage of his journey. After completing an undergraduate degree, he said he plans to remain in Xuzhou to pursue a master's degree and further shore up his expertise in international trade.

In the long term, he hopes to return to Liberia, contributing to stronger economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.
