Overview

Zhenjiang, a fresh and beautiful city on the south bank of the Yangtze River ,and inlaying at the intersection of the Yangtze River and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, connects Shanghai to the east and Nanjing to the west. Being one of the 13 cities directly under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu province, the city has sub cities including Danyang, Jurong and Yangzhong, and districts including Dantu, Jingkou, Runzhou and Zhenjiang New Area. Covering an area of 3843 square kilometers, the city has a population of 3.13 million, among which 1.15 million are urban residents. Zhenjiang has become a new and developing city combining port, industry, commerce & trade and tourism among the Yangtze River Delta regions.

Zhenjiang is a famous historical and cultural city, top tourist city, national hygienic city as well as state model city of environmental protection. With a large number of cultural relics and historical spots, Zhenjiang has three state-class units preserved as cultural relics and nineteen provincial ones. It features picturesque scenery and rich cultural deposit, with many great celebraties throughout the history, such as Shenkuo, Xin Qiji, Wang Anshi, Liu Xie and Wang Changling.

Location

Zhenjiang, known as "home of sweet and sour", is situated on the crossway of the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal. It is close to the city of Nanjing, Changzhou and Yangzhou. Zhenjiang serves as an important transportation hub in the Yangtze River Delta. Zhenjiang Port is one of the 5 major ports in Jiangsu province (the other four are Nanjing Port, Suzhou Port, Nantong Port and Lianyungang Port).

Climate

Zhenjiang is influenced by the Asian monsoon and the Yangtze River. The region has a subtropical climate and distinct seasons. Sunshine time is up to 2,057 hours and non-frost period adds to 238 days. It is warm and moist with adequate precipitation.

Economy

Zhenjiang has powerful economic strength. Its GPD in 2013 reached 295 billion yuan. Jiangsu Zhenjiang Export Processing Zone (EPZ) was founded on March, 2003 with the approval of the State Council. It is located in the eastern suburb of Zhenjiang, 28 kilometers away from the city's downtown, 1.5 kilometers away from Dagang Foreign Trade Port District and 15 kilometers away from the entrance of Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway.

Jiangsu Zhenjiang Export Processing Zone gathers many export-oriented enterprises, including those whose orders come from aboard, those requiring zero storage, dragon-head export enterprises, warehousing enterprises offering producing services and transportation enterprises.

One of the most intriguing legends associated with Zhenjiang, "Tale of the White Snake", spread over generations through Chinese folklore. It depicts a fantastic love story of a magic white snake thousands of years old reuniting with her human lover. This folk story has been adopted, edited and played in many Chinese folk operas, novels and movies.
