The 23rd International Seminar on Urban Form (ISUF 2016) took place at the Nanjing University (NJU), Jiangsu province from July 8 to 10. Zou Yajun, vice president of NJU, attended and gave an address at the opening ceremony.

The ISUF, inaugurated in 1994, is an international organization of urban form studies for researchers and practitioners, with the aim to advance research and practice in fields concerned with the built-up environments.

With a theme of Urban Morphology and the Resilient City, the conference this year attracted some 200 delegates from over 40 countries and regions, including about 80 researchers from the US, Europe, Australia and Africa, as well as students and teachers from many domestic universities.

Some famous scholars and professionals were also in attendance, including Professor Giancarlo Cataldi, the president of ISUF and Professor Jeremy Whitehand from the University of Birmingham.

Urban morphology is the study of the form of human settlements and the processes of their formation and transformation. The study seeks to understand the spatial structure and character of metropolitan areas, cities, towns or villages by examining the patterns of its component parts and the process of its development. This can involve the analysis of physical structures at different scales as well as patterns of movement, land use, ownership or control and occupation.
